On 21, 22 and 23 June, the Bonnefanten will be appearing again at the Pinkpop festival with its well-known Bonnefanten Pop-up museum.
In a spectacular new pavilion, the Bonnefanten is presenting the qualities of Stanley Donwood and rock artist Thom Yorke (known from the bands Radiohead and The Smile) as visual artists.
Maps of the New World at Pinkpop
Stanley Donwood (1968) and Thom Yorke (1968) met as students at the art academy. Since 1994, they have collaborated on hundreds of artworks, online projects and album covers for Yorke’s bands and his solo projects.
The Bonnefanten Pop-up museum is showing four recent acquisitions created by the artists’ duo. Three of the artworks stand out for their dreamy style and bright colours, and are made in a variety of sizes and materials. They also adorn the covers of albums by The Smile: ‘A Light for Attracting Attention’ (2022) and ‘Wall of Eyes’ (2024). These album covers are exhibited alongside the original artworks, and you can listen to the music in the Pop-up museum. At the beginning of this year, Stanley Donwood also made the linocut entitled A Map of the New World. The lino and the creative process are also part of the exhibition in the Pop-up museum.
Sources of inspiration for Maps of the New World
Donwood and Yorke took inspiration from 15th-century nautical charts used by Arab pirates and topographical studies done by the American army in the 1960’s. Using the symbols and signs on them, the artists’ duo developed their own visual language. Gradually, they deviated further and further from the strict logic of the charts, in order to create their own fantasy world.
Activities in the Bonnefanten Pop-up museum
On each day of the festival, YOUNG OFFICE, Bonnefanten’s youth department, has its own YO programme for young and old. In the Pop-up museum, you can draw an oracle card in the style of Stanley Donwood, design your own album cover or decorate yourself with a YOUNG OFFICE tattoo sticker. Take a seat at the reading table with books about iconic album covers and the work of Stanley Donwood, for example, and the biography of Thom Yorke. During Pinkpop, every 50th visitor to the Bonnefanten Pop-up museum will get a free, unique Bonnefanten T-shirt, designed by Stanley Donwood.On production of their Pinkpop armband, festival-goers can visit the Bonnefanten, in Maastricht, free of charge until Sunday 1 September 2024.
Where to find us
Look out for the tall Russian Box designed by architect Aldo Rossi and you can’t miss the Bonnefanten Pop-up museum at stage 4. The characteristic colours and lines of the eyecatcher are also reflected in the façade of the Pop-up museum. The exhibition Maps of the New World at Pinkpop is open every day and festival-goers can visit it free of charge.
After festival Pinkpop
After Pinkpop, the exhibition Stanley Donwood and Thom Yorke: Maps of the New World will return to the Bonnefanten, where the artworks can still be seen until 8 December 2024.
